The distinction comes down to the cooling and insulation medium. Oil-immersed transformers use insulating mineral oil to cool the core and windings, giving excellent thermal performance and efficiency. Dry-type transformers (such as cast-resin / epoxy SCB-series units) use air and solid insulation, eliminating the fire and leakage risk associated with oil.
